The future of the planet and its inhabitants rests on their knowledge and understanding of environmental and communal stewardship, and on the state of the world when they receive it into their care.<\/p>\n<p>With our partners, Olohana integrates <strong>youth education and training<\/strong> into our projects around food, energy, water, and knowledge systems, science and technology, disaster preparedness, and climate-change mitigation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/olohana.org\/index.php\/terrestrial-agriculture-research-learning-campus-convergence-science\/\"><b>ReCreATES VISIONS LEARNING CAMPUS\u2014<\/b><strong>Converging generational, place-based wisdom, and modern research<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1099 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Food-is-life_photo-credit-Sarah-Purgus-150x150.png\" alt=\"Child sitting at the table with plate of delicious food in front of him.\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Learning from past practices of convergence science, our community partners address a list of shared goals by converging generational, place-based wisdom, and modern research to create\u00a0<b>Rec<\/b>reating<b>\u00a0C<\/b>limate\u00a0<b>Re<\/b>silience\u00a0<b>A<\/b>daptation<b>: T<\/b>raditional\u00a0<b>E<\/b>cological<b>\u00a0S<\/b>tewardship\u00a0<b>(ReCreATES) Visions Learning Campus (RVLC). <\/b>The Learning Campus\u00a0is focused on terrestrial and agricultural research and education. Led by Olohana\u2019s executive director, Sarah Purgus as Terrestrial Environmental Director with Alex Meffert as Operations Director, this Learning Campus incorporates scientific analyses with traditional agroforestry and silvopasture techniques to support optimum soil health and nutrient dense crops, and opportunities for student engagement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/index.php\/lua-aloha-based-natural-movement-self-protection\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-883 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Ramsay-and-Remi_KCC-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Ramsay-and-Remi_KCC-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Ramsay-and-Remi_KCC-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Ramsay-and-Remi_KCC-360x243.jpg 360w, https:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Ramsay-and-Remi_KCC.jpg 913w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/index.php\/lua-aloha-based-natural-movement-self-protection\/\">NATURAL MOVEMENT SELF DEFENSE<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Olohana Foundation together with the Honoka\u2019a High &amp; Intermediate School and Kumu Ramsay Taum propose a project consisting of a series of\u00a0<strong>workshops to teach Natural Movement Self Defense (NMSD)<\/strong>\u00a0as developed by Kumu Ramsay Taum, founder of the Life Enhancement Institute of the Pacific and long-time Olohana affiliate.NMSD is a method of self-protection based on movements and gestures you already know and use in daily life at home, work, and school that can be used to break contact and protect oneself\u00a0or others in the case of an assault. Olohana works with communities to help them pass on knowledge between the generations using the ITK process. Olohana also works through the\u00a0<strong>PRiMO Indigenous Knowledge and Environment Hui<\/strong>\u00a0to help bring an indigenous voice to efforts such as the\u00a0<strong><a id=\"yui_3_17_2_6_1457412174950_2420\" href=\"http:\/\/ncadac.globalchange.gov\/download\/NCAJan11-2013-publicreviewdraft-chap12-tribal.pdf\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/ncadac.globalchange.gov\/download\/NCAJan11-2013-publicreviewdraft-chap12-tribal.pdf\">National Climate Assessment<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Food Systems \/ Agroforestry<\/strong><\/h2>\n<table style=\"width: 45%; float: left; margin-right: 16px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZJyikUh22gQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h4><strong>GLOBALLY UNITED YOUNG AGRO-FORESTERS (GUYA)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In 2016 at the PRiMO annual conference, Olohana launched the <a href=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/index.php\/global-breadfruit-heritage-council\/\"><strong>Global Breadfruit Heritage Council (GBHC).<\/strong><\/a> The purpose of GBHC is to protect the genetic, cultural, environmental, and product integrity of breadfruit and its cultivation; to promote this gluten-free food on the world market; and create economic opportunities for and offer technical support to farmers and communities in Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">One aspect of GBHC is <strong>GUYA Globally United Young Agro-foresters. <\/strong>Using <strong>ITK\u2122 Intergenerational Transfer of Knowledge,<\/strong>\u00a0Olohana and its partners, <strong>Agroforestery Net, Intertribal COUP, Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, the Makali\u2019i Polynesian Voyaging Society, <\/strong>and<strong> PRiMO IKE Hui,<\/strong> are working to develop GUYA (the U is short, as in hug) as one crucial component of the Ulu\/Breadfruit Initiative and GBHC to actively involve, coach, teach, and train youth in this community-directed program.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/index.php\/10000-homegrown-foodforests\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-565 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"10000 Homegrown FoodForests, a project of the Olohana Foundation\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo-768x407.jpg 768w, https:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo-1024x543.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo-360x191.jpg 360w, https:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo.jpg 1131w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/index.php\/10000-homegrown-foodforests\/\">10,000 HOMEGROWN FOODFORESTS<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Working with 100 communities in Hawaii, the U.S. mainland,\u00a0U.S.-affiliated islands, and internationally, in commemoration of the 100-year anniversary of Victory Gardens, we will plant 10,000 food forests and conduct a national indigenous phenology study.It is a proposal to the MacArthur Foundation for their 2016 100&amp;Change challenge.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>BREADFRUIT HERITAGE FOOD FORESTS<br \/>\nLIVING DEMONSTRATION SITES, HAWAII<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In 2015 Olohana initialized two food forest installations: a demonstration site in Waimea for <strong>Kanu O Ka &#8216;Aina Learning Ohana Charter School<\/strong> and a breadfruit heritage food forest for <strong>International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)<\/strong> 2016 conference Hawaii in Kaiholena in partnership with <strong>Hawaii National Park Service Ala Kahakai Trail Association.<\/strong> These food forest installations and demonstration sites provide real-life, hands-on training and learning opportunities in agroforestry and breadfruit cultivation for local students and the general community and visitors while also restoring and developing land to a healthy, sustainable state of equilibrium between community, flora and fauna, and the larger ecosystem.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>PARTNERSHIP FOR ADAPTIVE AMERICA (PAA)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\">The PAA promotes the education of and skills-training in habitat restoration and agroforesty within\u00a0two specific demographics: 1) veterans; and <strong>2) youth between the ages of 11 and 21.<\/strong> Our network partners will organize around youth to provide exploratory ritual and rites of passage ceremonies whereby they will be supported in their spiritual, cultural, and personal connection to and knowledge of the land, water, flora, and fauna.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\">With the <strong>Partnership for National Trails System, ATA Ala Kahakai National Trail, NOAA PSC\/CSC Pacific Services Center\/Coastal Services Center, <\/strong>and the<strong> U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs,<\/strong> returning veterans will be assisted with reintegration to society through habitat restoration and community building and engagement activities.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Natural Disaster Preparedness<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4><strong>ITK\u2122 RESILIENCE TRAINING FOR YOUTH<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The ITK\u2122 Resilience Training program is offered in partnership between<strong> Olohana, the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, <\/strong>and the<strong> Makali\u2019i Polynesian Voyaging Society.<\/strong> It uses a place-based learning model comprised of a land-based component (maha\u2019ai) and a nearshore-based component (\u2018aukai) aimed at helping to increase a community\u2019s capacity to impart critical skills and knowledge and initiate their youth to act as key players in addressing natural disaster and climate-related challenges anticipated to increase over the coming generations.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>YOUTH\u00a0RESILIENCE\u00a0COUNCIL<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">For a project called <strong>Youth\u2013Citizen Core 4 Community Capacity,<\/strong> Olohana and its partners established a youth resilience council, leveraging existing youth programs already working in their communities while enhancing the <strong>Pacific Risk Management Ohana (PRiMO)<\/strong>\u00a0network.
