Today, following centuries of oppression, Native communities face high levels of poverty, food insecurity, and poor health. Our goal is to work within our Native and underserved communities to develop and support rural development projects that build community capacity, increase food, energy, and water security, create economic opportunities, and restore the practice of traditional food systems and farming methods.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Food Systems \/ Agriculture<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/breadfruit-by-ap2il-Flickr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-377\" style=\"padding-left: 14px;\" src=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/breadfruit-by-ap2il-Flickr.jpg\" alt=\"Breadfruit by ap2il Flickr\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/breadfruit-by-ap2il-Flickr.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/breadfruit-by-ap2il-Flickr-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/breadfruit-by-ap2il-Flickr-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/breadfruit-by-ap2il-Flickr-360x270.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/index.php\/victree-gardens-homegrown-food-security\/\"><strong>VICTREE GARDENS: HOMEGROWN FOOD SECURITY<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Our VICTree Gardens Program, or Virtually Interconnected Community Tree Gardens, started eight years ago when we took a closer look through the lens of disaster preparedness at our communities to measure our resilience to natural and man-made disasters. The program derives wisdom from relationships we have with Native Elders, scientists, mothers, and others in our community, and and offers a practical, achievable, dependable and localized solution: small tree gardens planted in yards, and the ability to virtually connect them all. Each of these Tree Gardens can create a perennial food forest designed to provide emergency nourishment for a family of four for four to six days in the event of a natural disaster.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>BREADFRUIT AGROFORESTRY INSTRUCTION<br \/>\n&amp; TRAINING\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">For the past several years, the <strong>U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)<\/strong> and the <strong>U.S. Office of International Affairs (OIA)<\/strong> have contracted with\u00a0<strong>M. Kalani Souza,<\/strong> Olohana founding director, and Olohana partner, <strong>Agroforestry Net\u2019s Craig Elevitch,<\/strong> as instructors to teach breadfruit agroforestry. They have traveled throughout Polynesia, Micronesia, U.S. affiliate islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands as instructors.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/index.php\/10000-homegrown-foodforests\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-565 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"10000 Homegrown FoodForests, a project of the Olohana Foundation\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo-300x159.jpg 300w, http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo-768x407.jpg 768w, http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo-1024x543.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo-360x191.jpg 360w, http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Olohana-FoodForests_imagelogo.jpg 1131w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/index.php\/10000-homegrown-foodforests\/\">10,000 HOMEGROWN FOODFORESTS<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Working with 100 communities in Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, U.S.-affiliated islands, and internationally, in commemoration of the 100-year anniversary of Victory Gardens, we will plant 10,000 food forests and conduct a national indigenous phenology study.\u00a0It is a proposal to the MacArthur Foundation for their 2016 100&amp;Change challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>BREADFRUIT HERITAGE FOOD FORESTS LIVING DEMONSTRATION SITES, HAWAII<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.5; padding-left: 30px;\">In 2015 Olohana initialized two food forest installations: a demonstration site in Waimea for <strong>Kanu O Ka &#8216;Aina Learning Ohana Charter School<\/strong> and a breadfruit heritage food forest for <strong>International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)<\/strong> 2016 conference Hawaii in Kaiholena in partnership with <strong>Hawaii National Park Service Ala Kahakai Trail Association.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong><a id=\"uluinitiative\"><\/a>BREADFRUIT\/ULU INITIATIVE: FOOD &amp; ENERGY MICRO-HUBS<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Olohana partners with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/pitiviti.org\/initiatives\/eldp\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Micronesian Executive Leadership Initiative,<\/a> University of Hawaii at Manoa <a href=\"http:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shidler College of Business,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agroforestry.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agroforestry Net,<\/a> <\/strong>and<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intertribalcoup.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Intertribal Counc<\/strong>il on Utility Policy<\/a><\/strong> to create local food and renewable energy micro-hubs for community self-sufficiency and economic development and opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Foodforest-Kona-CElevitch-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-496\" src=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Foodforest-Kona-CElevitch-4-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"Foodforest, Kona, Hawaii (photo by Craig Elevitch)\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Foodforest-Kona-CElevitch-4-232x300.jpg 232w, http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Foodforest-Kona-CElevitch-4-209x270.jpg 209w, http:\/\/olohana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Foodforest-Kona-CElevitch-4.jpg 618w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/a>FOOD FOREST DEVELOPMENT\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Olohana works with ten farms on the Big Island to establish food forest farms, from \u00bc acre homesteads to large commercial farms, some are well established as organic, polycultured farms and others Olohana assists in transitioning from coffee and mac nut monocrops to breadfruit agroforests.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Energy Systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4><strong>BREADFRUIT\/ULU INITIATIVE: FOOD &amp; ENERGY MICRO-HUBS<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The Breadfruit\/Ulu Initiative is a multi-pronged project. While food production using traditional growing practices of the Pacific Islands and tropics is the project&#8217;s first objective, energy production is part of the equation. Using plant byproducts and new technology, the Breadfruit\/Ulu Initiative will produce micro-energy hubs for local consumption and area distribution. Olohana partners with the <strong>Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii, Intertribal Council on Utility Policy, Agroforestry Net,<\/strong> and others in the development of this initiative.<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Community Economic Development<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4><strong>ULU INITIATIVE: FOOD &amp; ENERGY MICRO-HUBS<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Among its other objectives to promote food and energy security for Native populations and under-served communities in Hawaii, the Pacific and Caribbean Islands, and other tropical nations, the Breadfruit\/Ulu Initiative includes opportunities for the\u00a0economic advancement of participating\u00a0communities.
