{"id":30,"date":"2016-03-08T04:50:02","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T04:50:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olohana.org\/?page_id=30"},"modified":"2016-06-23T11:53:51","modified_gmt":"2016-06-23T21:53:51","slug":"projects","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/olohana.org\/index.php\/projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"column-group columns-3\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"column column-number-1 column-span-1\"><\/p>\n<h2>Global Breadfruit Heritage Council<\/h2>\n<p><i>The purpose of <\/i><i>the <\/i><i>Global Breadfruit Heritage Council <\/i><i>is <\/i><i>to honor and protect <\/i><i>the <\/i><i>genetic, cultural\/spiritual, environmental, and product integrity of breadfruit.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Olohana is supporting the formation of the GBHC as a mechanism to promote local and regionally correct agroforesty practices in the formation of breadfruit as a leading gluten free food on the world market.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Ulu Initiative: Empowering Communities through Food and Renewable Energy Micro-Hubs<\/h2>\n<p>Olohana partners with experts from indigenous communities around the world to develop food and energy systems for their communities in ways that strengthen their communities, cultural ties, and collaboration with other native peoples.<\/p>\n<p>Partnerships with Shidler School of Business, Agroforestry Net, and Intertribal Council on Utilities Policy (COUP)\u00a0allows Olohana to work with communities and small farms to create local food and renewable energy micro-hubs. For instance, Olohana is currently working with\u00a0Shidler School of Business to grow the Pacific Ulu (Breadfruit) Initiative and explore opportunities for setting up micr-hubs to produce and process ulu into value-addejd products. This social enterprise opportunity will benefit\u00a0communities throughout\u00a0Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"column column-number-2 column-span-1\"><\/p>\n<h2>Native Expert Advisory Council (NEAC)<\/h2>\n<p>Olohana works with our partners, such as the NOAA Pacific Services Center and the PRiMO Indigenous Knowledge and Environment (IKE) Hui, to organize and support an native expert advisory council (NEAC) comprised of Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders, and Native Alaskans committed to forwarding our society\u2019s understanding of climate change and variability through multi-generational knowledge systems and modern science. The native expert advisory council (NEAC) contributed to the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_17_2_6_1457412174950_2349\" href=\"http:\/\/ncadac.globalchange.gov\/download\/NCAJan11-2013-publicreviewdraft-chap12-tribal.pdf\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/ncadac.globalchange.gov\/download\/NCAJan11-2013-publicreviewdraft-chap12-tribal.pdf\">National Climate Assessment<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_17_2_6_1457412174950_2312\" href=\"http:\/\/nar.ucar.edu\/2013\/nesl\/72c7-nesl-community-tutorials-and-workshops\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/nar.ucar.edu\/2013\/nesl\/72c7-nesl-community-tutorials-and-workshops\">Rising Voices Rising Voices National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Workshop<\/a>\u00a0in partnership with the\u00a0Indigenous Peoples Climate Change Working Group and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Community Resilience Training<\/h2>\n<p>Olohana partners with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/alka\/index.htm\">Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_17_2_6_1457412174950_2399\" href=\"http:\/\/pvs.kcc.hawaii.edu\/ike\/kalai_waa\/makalii.html\">Makali&#8217;i Polynesian Voyaging Society<\/a>\u00a0to offer community resilience and climate adaptation planning.<\/p>\n<p>The ITK\u2122 Resilience Training Program uses a place-based learning model comprised of a land-based component (maha\u2019ai)\u00a0and a nearshore-based component (\u2018aukai) aimed at helping to increase a community&#8217;s capacity\u00a0to impart critical skills and knowledge to initiate their youth\u00a0as key players in addressing natural disaster and climate-related challenges anticipated to increase over the coming generations.<\/p>\n<\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"column column-number-3 last column-span-1\"><\/p>\n<h2>International Native Science Research Center<\/h2>\n<p>The Native Science Research Center (NSRC)\u00a0enables professors, students and communities from around the world to work together to advance indigenous and local knowledge and scientific research around climate change and weather systems.\u00a0 All knowledge systems and knowledge generated are developed for the purpose of serving and advancing tribal, indigenous and native peoples. Haskell Foundation (501.c.3) in partnership with Haskell Native American University houses and administers NSRC. Olohana Foundation and our partners, such as Pasifika Foundation and the University of Hawaii\u00a0Shidler Business College Pacific Business Programs, support the center by coordinating the participation of a native advisory council and assisting with solicitation of grant and social enterprise opportunities to support the research center\u2019s activities as they benefit local communities.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Inter-generational Transfer of Knowledge \u00a0(ITK)<\/h2>\n<p>Olohana works with communities to help them pass on knowledge between the generations using the ITK\u2122 process.
